The Ultimate Wedding Videography Shot List: From Pre-Wedding to Reception

Great videography in a wedding starts long before the edit. Use this shot list to plan every moment — from the pre-wedding shoot to the last dance at the reception — so nothing important is missed.

Pre-Wedding Shoot

The pre-wedding film sets the tone. Plan locations around soft morning or golden-hour light.

  • Wide establishing shot of the location
  • Couple walking towards camera, hand in hand
  • Slow-motion candid laughter and close moments
  • Close-ups: hands, rings, glances
  • Drone or high-angle reveal (where permitted)
  • Silhouette against the sunset
  • A short voice note or letter read by each partner for narration

Getting Ready

Detail shots here become the visual glue of the whole edit.

  • Outfit, jewellery, shoes and invitation flat-lay
  • Makeup and hair final touches
  • Bride and groom putting on key pieces (sherwani, dupatta, watch, bangles)
  • Family reactions on first look
  • Mirror reflection portrait
  • Quiet nervous moments before leaving

Haldi

Bright, colourful and messy — shoot fast and protect the gear.

  • Haldi bowls, marigolds and décor details
  • Elders applying the first haldi
  • Slow-motion haldi being smeared and thrown
  • Wide shot of the full family celebration
  • Close-up of the couple's laughing faces covered in yellow
  • Water or flower shower moments

Mehendi & Sangeet

Capture both the intricate details and the high-energy performances.

  • Macro shots of the mehendi design in progress
  • Hunting for the partner's name in the mehendi
  • Choreographed dance performances — wide and close
  • Couple's own performance from multiple angles
  • Crowd reactions and cheering
  • Speeches and toasts with clean audio

Baraat & Arrival

Movement and energy — a gimbal is your best friend here.

  • Groom's entry (horse, car or on foot)
  • Dhol players and dancing friends
  • Bride's family welcoming the baraat
  • Bride's entry under phoolon ki chadar
  • First look of the couple at the mandap

Wedding Ceremony

The heart of the film. Never miss these — position cameras before rituals begin.

  • Wide shot of the mandap and venue
  • Jaimala / varmala exchange
  • Kanyadaan and parents' emotions
  • Pheras around the sacred fire
  • Sindoor and mangalsutra close-ups
  • Vows and the priest's mantras (clean audio)
  • Bidaai — the most emotional moment of the day

Reception

Glamour, lights and celebration — the film's grand finale.

  • Venue décor, lights and stage establishing shots
  • Couple's grand entry
  • First dance
  • Cake cutting and toasts
  • Guests blessing the couple on stage
  • Dance floor energy and candid fun
  • Final wide shot or sparkler exit to close the film

Pro Tips for a Cinematic Wedding Film

  • Record clean audio — vows, speeches and parents' blessings make the film emotional.
  • Shoot plenty of B-roll: décor, venue, food, hands and details help the edit flow.
  • Share a timeline with your videographer so no ritual is missed.
  • Assign a family member to point out key relatives to the crew.
  • Back up footage the same day across two drives.
